Tolkien, author of Lord Of the Rings, and WWI veteran, wrote one of the most profound pieces of epic literature after his experiences in the war. Rather than joining his contemporaries in nihilistic expressions of art post-war, a sentiment that one could argue led to the foundation of the eugenics movement that led towards WWII, he focused on the heroic tale that depicts the power of the individual, analogous to the hobbit. Here we juxtapose a mere mortal character of Lord of the Rings, Bilbo Baggins, who battled the seduction of the ring of power, with President Higgins, the current Irish leader. “One ring to rule them all” - could this be Tolkien’s understanding of a world falling towards collectivism? “We don’t belong here Merry, it’s too big for us. What can we do in the end? We’ve got the shire, maybe we should go home.” “The fires of Isengard will spread.... And all that was once great and good in this world will be gone.
