Hello Everyone,
Our events are not, nor have ever been, a threat to student safety on the UBC campus.
Last year we brought Armin Navabi, Dr. Frances Widdowson, Dr. Ricardo Duchesne, and Meghan Murphy, all controversial people, no doubt. However, no matter how controversial, or even abhorrent, all of those speakers and their ideas were, they never advocated for any sort of violence, and no one ever got hurt when attending those events. Consequently, we never had to pay for security.
This changed when the Bigots Against Studentry came into the picture. Ever since their protest to Jenn Smith in June, in which they brought masked people to bang on the glass doors and invade the venue to disrupt the talk, the UBC administration has been wary and started charging us security fees.
We support the executives’ commitment to student safety, as we do not think anyone should fear for their life and well-being because they have a different opinion. That is the whole point of this group, to restore tolerance on this campus. We are not the ones putting people in danger.
In light of this, we have come up with a simple solution to make the administration’s approach that much more reasonable: send the bill to the bigots, not to us.
So, UBC Students Against Bigotry, here’s the receipts for security for the Navabi and the Duchesne and Hecht events, it’s a total of $896, you can just Interac it to president@ubcsfe.ca.
Cheers,
UBCSFE
