More here: Sussex Balloon Fiesta going ahead despite change to provincial funding
"We as a government need to be accountable to taxpayers. We need to measure our investments. To receive the big amount of [$25,000] in the tourism fund, you’ve got to be able to give us data," Thériault said.
The tourism fund now requires events to sell tickets so that they can track postal codes of attendees to demonstrate to the province that at least 15 per cent of their visitors came from at least 75 kilometres away.
"Because the balloon fiesta didn’t meet those criteria, they were simply transferred to the community fund, where all the free events happen," she said.
Thériault said decisions about previous funding amounts for the balloon festival had been "a political move" by the area's MLA Tammy Scott-Wallace, formerly the tourism minister under the Higgs government, because it was in her riding.
"Things like that happen. That's why the auditor general said to the department: You gotta set things straight," Thériault said."
