Nova Scotia's Elizabeth Smith-McCrossin May 7, 2024 on X Post

"Elizabeth Smith-McCrossin
I am a Nurse One of my only memories of my Mom was of her in the hospital and the nurses dressed in white that took care of her. They were angels to me. I grew up wanting to be one of them. After high school, I went to Dal for 4 years and became an RN. I worked in Toronto at Women's College Hospital, working casual (every day) on 4 different floors, including cardiology, infectious disease, dermatology and family medicine. My husband was doing his residency at the same hospital, and in his last month, we spent one month up north at Sioux Lookout and Webeque. There, I volunteered with the Nurse practitioner. Then we moved to Liverpool, NS, and I worked in the Operating Room/Recovery Room and, after 2 years, transitioned to family practice working with my husband. We moved to Wisconsin three years later, where I taught prenatal and breastfeeding classes. Two years later, we came to Amherst, where I worked again as a family practice nurse, and two after that, I started a business to offer turn-key medical practices to recruit more physicians to Amherst. Some of my first clients were Dr. Bobadilla and Dr. Rubio-Reyes, Dr. Martin McLennand and Dr. Tena Frizzle. I continued to practice clinically while opening Amherst Family Health Clinic and After Hours Clinic. Ran a Phase 3 Clinical Research Trial with Astra Zeneca for the drug Crestor. I hired Shirley Mack and Beverly Smith, both RNs, to work with me and the docs. In 2009 I sold the clinic, taught the Practional Nursing Program at NSCC in Springhill for the final 6 months of the program. Opened Damaris Spa and Wellness Centre and held well-women clinics at Damaris until 2017, when I offered for public office. In 2013, I taught Practical Nursing again for one year at NSCC to help as the Program came to Amherst full-time. In the mix, I did my MBA and raised 4 children 🙂 Since 2017, I have continued as a Registered Nurse, working to produce legislation and policies to improve healthcare in Nova Scotia. Since the last election in August 2021, I have tabled 30 healthcare bills. nslegislature.ca/members/profil Through persistence, we changed the requirements for LPNs so that all LPNs can apply for the 2-year RN program, not just LPNs who studied at NSCC. We are still working to end the discrimination against nurses in Cumberland who are not eligible for the Student Loan Forgiveness Program because they went to school in Moncton, NB, even though they live and work in Nova Scotia. In honour of Nurses Week and in honour of my Mother, who died far too young from cancer, today I thank all nurses. I hope you know the true, lasting impact you make on the lives of your patients and their families. Bless you, and thank you. I will never stop being a nurse. I will continue to help my constituents who need and deserve healthcare to the best of my ability. I will continue to work hard at the legislative level to improve the healthcare system and the culture for all nurses and their patients and families. #nursesweek #nurses #healthcare"
