The original family name of the Rothschilds was Bauer. Born in Frankfurt in 1744, Mayer Amschel Bauer changed his surname and founded the Rothschild banking dynasty. Bauer in German means 'Farmer'.

"Bauer" also means "pawn" in chess. In medieval chess, each of the 8 pawns was associated with a profession, one of which was "merchant or money changer (in front of the king)".
