A letter to Minister John Haggie share by a loving parent 
I'm writing as a very concerned grandparent with regards to the most recent letter that was sent home with my two grandchildren yesterday (ages 5 & 
. I can't express enough, how upsetting it was to read that children at these highly impressionable ages can be exposed to such a delicate subject. At this most innocent age, children should not be thrown into the political pot of sexual preference/s or identification. It is pure exploitation. There is a required vulnerability check on adults prior to be exposed to teaching/assisting children in schools but yet, our children can be exposed to drag queen visits in the name of "new normal and inclusiveness"? There is a multi level of mental health involved here (the drag queen's AND the children's) and the once safe school is not the right environment to permit these groups to express themselves at the risk of affecting our vulnerable children! Thankfully, there was enough consideration in place to require parental consent up to grade 6. There's possible hope! Alarmingly though, after grade 6 onward, no consent? Our EDUCATED officials need not be reminded that until age 18, children are in the direction, guidance, and care of an ADULT (aka Parents)! The frontal lobe development is a real topic that might warrant a revisit before our officials dictate a "no consent"go ahead to parents in the name of protecting CHILDREN! If this is truly all about ensuring inclusiveness, then that's not the way to balance the scales! What this is, is a drastic heavy tipping in the loss of parental power versus governing power. There is a master agenda that is hiding under the guise of inclusivity here. Inclusive can be defined by words such as fairness, equality, etc. This is anything but. This is deletion of the ability for parents to be what they were designed to be! There is no one more invested into a child's life than that of a parent, grandparent, or legal guardian. This is nothing more than a stripping of these rights and putting our most vulnerable (our children) at risk of a future that will inevitably be paved with despair. If mental health/suicide was considered at an all time high before, brace yourself."

John Alastair Haggie[4][5] is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly in the 2015 provincial election.[6] He represents the electoral district of Gander as a member of the Liberal Party.[6]
Haggie was born to a mother whose maiden surname was Wilson in Manchester, England, in March 1954. His father died when he was young, and his mother's younger brother Glyn helped raise him.[5] Haggie was educated at William Hulme's Grammar School, after which he completed his medical education at Victoria University of Manchester in 1977. He trained in general surgery in the North West Region, culminating in earning his Fellowship in 1981. Subsequently, after a two-year fellowship at the Christie Hospital and Paterson Institute for Cancer Research, he received a doctorate in cancer research in 1987.
After working as a surgeon, tutor, and a lecturer at universities in Manchester and Liverpool, Haggie immigrated to Newfoundland and Labrador in 1993. He practiced as a general surgeon with the Grenfell Region Health Services in St. Anthony until 1997, when he relocated his practice to the James Paton Memorial Hospital in Gander. He served as president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association from 2001 to 2002. Haggie also served as president of the Canadian Medical Association from 2011 to 2012.[7][8]
Haggie was appointed to cabinet in the Ball government as Minister of Health and Community Services[1] on December 14, 2015. He was re-elected in the 2019 provincial election. On August 19, 2020 Haggie was reappointed Minister of Health and Community Services in the Furey government.[9] At the time he was the longest serving NL Minister of Health and Community Services in thirty six years.
Haggie was re-elected in the 2021 provincial election.[10] Following the election, he was reappointed Minister of Health and Community Services.[11] On July 6, 2022, Haggie was appointed Minister of Education.[12] On June 14, 2023, he was appointed Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs.[13] On March 3, 2025, Minister John Hogan resigned his cabinet position and Haggie was named interim Minister of Health and Community Services.[14]
On July 14, 2025, Haggie announced that he would not seek reelection.[15]
Haggie had three children with his first wife, Jane Elizabeth (nee Wilson) - Hollie, Jennifer, and Elizabeth. Jane died at age 52 on May 25, 2005 in Gander.[16] He is currently married to Jeannette Augot, a registered nurse employed by the Central Health Regional Medical Authority.[5]
His favorite book is Shōgun by James Clavell.[5] He also holds an interest in competitive handgun shooting, having tried out to become a squad member of the Welsh national team prior to immigrating to Canada.[5]
On January 1, 2022, Haggie announced on his Facebook page that he tested positive for COVID-19.[17]

I Bought an Abandoned House on a Remote Island - Surviving Winter [ NFLD ]

Mar 2, 2025 Winter has taken over the island, and living off-grid out here is no joke. With no roads, no power, and the North Atlantic cutting us off from the mainland, every day is a new challenge.
In this video, we take you deep into remote winter living here in outport Newfoundland. Showing the challenges of staying warm, hauling water, and keeping boats from freezing in subzero temperatures. We rely on an old stone well for drinking water, cut firewood to heat the abandoned house, and battle ice, wind, and isolation just to get through the season.
Winter on an off-grid island means nothing comes easy—everything freezes, things break, and survival is a daily grind. Later in the video, we finally get off the island and head to the mainland for a much-needed break, snowmobiling through Newfoundland’s backcountry with friends.
This is what off-grid island living looks like in winter—cold, unpredictable, but one heck of an adventure.

One of the founders of the movement that led to the creation of Qalipu First Nation says he was booted from the band after enrolment criteria changed — and he argues the controversy over membership is antithetical to his original vision.
In 1972, John Oliver helped form the Federation of Newfoundland Indians, the organization that fought for recognition of Mi'kmaq in Newfoundland and eventually led to the creation of Qalipu First Nation in 2008.
"As an aboriginal it was very important to get recognized," explained Oliver, who appeared by video in Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court on Tuesday. He successfully applied to join the band in 2011."
"First it started out pretty good.… Then it all changed."
