"Dolly Parton died at 80 at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, according to a statement from her publicist, who said she had faced a brief battle with cancer. The type of cancer was not disclosed.
The family statement named the part of her legacy that belongs in a health publication. Alongside the books her literacy program distributed, it cited her role in "funding research that helped create a lifesaving vaccine used around the world."
"That reference points to a specific, documented gift. In April 2020, Parton donated one million dollars to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to support work against COVID-19, made in honor of Naji Abumrad, a professor of surgery there and a longtime friend. According to Vanderbilt Health News, the funding supported research that contributed to the development of Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine. Parton later received her own dose at Vanderbilt."
