Three Elections, Three Provinces, Three Bootcamp - CIVIX Canada

"In anticipation of the upcoming provincial election on October 21, CIVIX traveled to Fredericton to hold our first-ever Democracy Bootcamp in New Brunswick. Taking place right at the end of summer, educators who attended were eager to get back in the swing of things and learn how to engage their students in Student Vote at the beginning of a new school year. 

The event kicked off with CIVIX CEO Lindsay Mazzucco speaking on the importance of Student Vote, including a preview of lesson plans and programming resources. Next was the Elections & Democracy panel discussion moderated by Vanessa Vander Valk (CBC) and featuring panelists Erica Butler (CHMA), Jamie Gillies (STU) and Jacques Poitras (CBC). This group of experts discussed the upcoming New Brunswick election and some of the challenges facing democracy today, including polarization, distrust in institutions, and the prevalence of disinformation. 

Kim Poffenroth, CEO of Elections New Brunswick spoke to teachers on the importance of democratic participation and civic education, and thanked the educators who attended for their dedication. 

In the afternoon, CIVIX staff led several discussion sessions and teachers activities aimed at facilitating discussion in the classroom, digital media literacy, and how to best engage students within democracy and the election process. 

In total, 55 educators attended the event from throughout the province.

On today’s show, we learn about a recruitment program at the Drew Nursing Home, which has resulted in 25 nurses originally from the Philippines being hired to work in Sackville. Thanks to the additional staff, the Drew is now operating at full capacity, after many years with empty beds.

We talk with Drew director Linda Shannon, Thrive NB co-founder Carol Chapman, and Charie May Ili, a registered nurse from the Philippines who came to Sackville in November 2024 to work at the Drew.

"CHMA is very excited to announce that we are offering a new position for Community Programming and Outreach starting September 1st, 2023.

CHMA plays an essential role in local news and independent culture at Mount Allison University and in the Tantramar area. We have been awarded this funding through the Community Radio Fund of Canada’s Radiometres program to develop community programming that will help us increase our number of volunteers, extend our presence in the community, and produce content and discussions with community members, while supporting and promoting media literacy.

The successful applicant will engage and inspire current and potential volunteers, develop hyper-local community based content, partner with community organizations to expand our audience and assist in their promotion and outreach, including underrepresented groups, new immigrants and marginalized communities.

The goal of this funding is to increase the number of volunteers involved in producing local media with CHMA, increasing the number of hours of our local content, and assisting in the production of segments that promote community events and interests, all of which we hope will increase our presence in the community and the communities presence on our airwaves.

As a CHMA staff member you will work also work with our staff and volunteers to further our mandate of informing and entertaining our community to meet the diverse needs of the communities of Westmoreland and Cumberland counties, NB & NS.

~You will play an integral role in the day-to-day functions of CHMA in our collaborative work environment.
~You are invited to contribute to programming, audio production, broadcasting, and journalism through both our on-air broadcasting and online platforms. 
~You agree to produce content each week that contributes to our on-air broadcast and/or online distribution platforms.
~You will be expected to attend our weekly staff meetings and our monthly board meetings.

CHMA is committed to diversity and inclusiveness. We encourage applications from Women in STEM as well as members of racialized communities, Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, and persons of all sexual orientations and gender identities.

"The banner year in paving will be a legacy left by Dwayne Acton, the town’s engineer who attended his final council meeting on Monday night.

Acton is moving on to a role with Mount Allison University, serving as manager of projects, where he says he will have a chance to focus more on engineering and less on management.
CAO Jamie Burke noted the occasion on Monday evening. “It is a sad day for for the entire management team,” said Burke. “This individual poured his heart and soul into this organization and this community.”

“I’ve told you all before,” said Burke, “it will be an extremely difficult position to backfill, so on behalf of all of my colleagues across the organization, thank you, Dwayne, for what you’ve done.”
